How Sunscreen Works | We Are Feel Good Sunscreen FAQ's

If you've been in the store on James Street lately, you've probably noticed we're big fans of We Are Feel Good Inc. sunscreen. Like, genuinely love-it-and-recommend-it-to-everyone big fans. Living on the Gold Coast, sunscreen isn't optional - it's as essential as your morning coffee. So I wanted to put together a proper FAQ to explain how it actually works, what the labels mean, and how to find the right formula for your skin.

How does sunscreen actually work?

Here's something that surprises a lot of people: all sunscreens, whether mineral or chemical, work by absorbing UV radiation and converting it into a tiny amount of heat, which then dissipates harmlessly from your skin.

The old myth that mineral sunscreens "reflect" UV rays like a mirror? Not quite how it works. Both types absorb UV; the difference is in the ingredients used.

  • Chemical (organic) sunscreens use carbon-based molecules to absorb UV rays.
  • Physical (mineral) sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to do the same job.

The Mineral SPF 50+ Zinc Stick from We Are Feel Good Inc. is one of our bestsellers in-store — it goes on lightweight and invisible, none of that chalky white cast that put people off mineral sunscreen for years.

Why do you need to wear sunscreen every single day in Australia?

Because the sun up here doesn't take days off, and neither should your SPF. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and melanoma is the most common cancer in Australians aged 20–39. That stat genuinely stops me in my tracks every time.

On top of the health side, around 80% of visible skin ageing is caused by sun exposure. So if you're investing in good skincare, not wearing SPF is a bit like locking your front door and leaving the window wide open.

Dr Scott McGregor, skin cancer physician and co-founder of We Are Feel Good Inc. recommends SPF 50+ every single day, full stop. Rainy day in Burleigh? Still. Office day? Still. Quick school run? Absolutely still.

How often do you need to reapply sunscreen?

Apply your sunscreen about 20 minutes before you head outside, then reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or towelling off.

For coverage, you're looking at:

  • Face and neck: about a teaspoon (5mL)
  • Full body: about 35mL — that's roughly 2.5 tablespoons

Don't skip the back of your hands and ears. Hands especially as they're in the sun constantly and one of the first places to show age.

Even on a day where you're mostly indoors, a midday top-up is worth it if you're nipping out for lunch or walking to your car.

What does SPF 50+ actually mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It measures how much longer you can stay in the sun without burning compared to wearing nothing at all.

SPF 50+ means you can theoretically stay out 50 times longer without burning - if you apply it correctly and reapply as needed. That's why coverage and reapplication matter just as much as the SPF number itself.

Here in Queensland, SPF 50+ is the standard we recommend. Our UV levels are no joke, and SPF 30 just doesn't cut it for most of us day-to-day.

What does broad spectrum mean on a sunscreen label?

Broad spectrum means the sunscreen protects against both types of UV rays:

  • UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are the main driver of premature ageing — fine lines, pigmentation, that kind of thing.
  • UVB rays sit closer to the surface and are what cause sunburn.

You need protection from both. Always check for "Broad Spectrum" on the label, all We Are Feel Good Inc. SPF 50+ formulas cover both.

Which We Are Feel Good sunscreen is right for my skin type?

The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually reach for every morning. Here's how I think about it:

Sensitive or reactive skin? The Sensitive SPF 50+ is your go-to. It's fragrance-free, packed with anti-inflammatory antioxidants, and designed to be kind to even the most reactive skin.

Active days, beach days, or water sports? All of the We Are Feel Good Inc. SPF 50+ formulas are four-hour water-resistant and dermatologically tested, so you're covered whether you're in the surf at Burleigh or sweating through a coastal walk.

Everyday wear under makeup? The zinc stick is brilliant as a finishing layer or for reapplication over your base without disturbing your makeup.

If you're ever unsure, come past the store on James Street and we'll help you work it out in person. We stock the full range.

Is sunscreen actually safe to use?

Yes, and in Australia, that's not just marketing talk. Every sunscreen sold here must be tested and approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) before it can hit shelves. TGA-approved sunscreens carry an AUSTL number, which tells you the product meets national safety and efficacy standards.

Every We Are Feel Good Inc. product is TGA-listed and rigorously tested. You can trust what you're putting on your skin.

What if sunscreen irritates my skin or I have allergies?

Sunscreen allergies are actually pretty rare, affecting roughly 1% of users, and they're usually caused by specific preservatives, fragrances, or ingredients like vitamin E or beeswax rather than sunscreen itself.

If you're prone to reactions, the We Are Feel Good Sensitive SPF 50+ was specifically formulated to remove the usual culprits. It's free from fragrance and common irritants, without compromising on protection.

When trying any new sunscreen, always patch test first, apply a small amount to your inner arm or thigh and wait a few hours before going full-face.

Is sunscreen enough on its own?

No sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays, which is why it works best as part of a broader sun-smart routine. Here's what I always recommend:

  • SPF 50+ broad spectrum sunscreen, reapplied throughout the day
  • A wide-brimmed hat  we carry a great range in canvas and straw, including styles that actually look good
  • UV-protective sunglasses to protect the skin around your eyes
  • Lightweight long sleeves where you can, especially between 10am and 4pm when UV peaks

Living at Burleigh, we're lucky to have the beach on our doorstep, but that also means more exposure. Layering up your sun protection is just part of life here, and honestly, it becomes second nature pretty quickly.

Sunscreen is one of the most effective things you can do for your skin, today and long-term. We stock the full We Are Feel Good Inc. range in-store on James Street, Burleigh Heads, so you can find your formula in person, or shop the full collection online here.
